Artwork Description
Art Smith incorporated abstracted life forms and tribal motifs into his work, which was driven by his interest in expression and movement. One historian, in fact, has linked Smith’s jewelry to his love for the rhythms and melodies of jazz. His careful use of positive and negative space in this piece illustrates his belief that jewelry was an incomplete sculptural expression until it was related to the body.
